What's the situation with VAT when booking with Hiyacar? โœ๏ธ ๐Ÿ“Ž

The VAT situation for a Hiyacar booking will vary a bit depending on whether the car you've booked belongs to a 'peer to peer' car owner, or is part of our accredited 'car club.'

Peer to Peer

No VAT is charged on anything for peer to peer bookings as we declare VAT on these bookings via the Tour Operators Margin Scheme.

Car Club

VAT is charged on the rental fee paid for the vehicle itself, as well as on the booking fee. However, no VAT is charged on the cost of the driver's insurance as that is a disbursement passed directly to the insurer, and as an insurance product it is liable for insurance premium tax, which isnโ€™t reclaimable.

How can I obtain a VAT receipt for my booking?

We're working on allowing members to download VAT receipts directly via the Hiyacar app, but for the time-being if you do need a VAT receipt please just open a live chat or drop us an email at and one of the team will be able to provide this for you. Please do bear in mind that the receipt may look a little different based on whether you booked a car club or peer to peer vehicle.
